July 27, 2019
Island County Commissioner's Hearing Room

Doors open at 0900, meeting starts at 0930

HEX Beams

Darryl Holman, WW7D

The hex beam family of antennas has become increasingly popular as a simple, lightweight, low wind load, and inexpensive alternative to traditional Yagi-Uda antennas.  This presentation reviews the design of hex beam and related antennas. The advantages and disadvantages are examined, and the antenna's components and various construction techniques are reviewed.

Darryl Holman, WW7D, has been licensed since 1976 when he earned the call WN9TCY at age 15.  He upgraded to a General and then Advanced class license shortly thereafter.  Following about 20 years of minimal activity, he enthusiastically took up hamming again in 2010, and upgraded to the Extra class license.
His primary interests now are mobile contesting, Summits on the Air (SOTA),  antenna building, and DXing. Much of his operating is roving by car (and occasionally airplane) during VHF and HF contests.  Darryl serves as the 7QP co-captain for Washington state.  He also avidly activates SOTA summits and chases SOTA activations from home. He serves as the SOTA association manager for Washington state.  For his day job, Darryl is a professor of anthropology at the University of Washington.  He lives in Redmond.
